DEX Studio designed the Keeshen property to highlight warm, modern design with indoor-outdoor living for a small family with Midwestern roots. To accomplish this, DEX re-oriented the overall layout and added a second story to the original non-descript, single-story home. Using the firm’s signature visual language of texture and natural materials, the home has open, but idiosyncratic feel that stimulates the senses.
What were the solutions?
A second floor with views of the surrounding landscape, was added to provide needed space for the clients family to grow.. Living spaces downstairs were made to connect occupants to each other based on use. These spaces extended to the private yard at the rear, and conversely, the walk friendly neighborhood at the front yard.
What were the key challenges?
The original home was a non-descript, closed-in, single-story home that lacked the qualities the client's growing family wanted. Spaces were needed to provide privacy for creative exploration, while also providing connections to share space as a family and guests. The existing house was closed off from the family friendly neighborhood.
Who are the clients and what's interesting about them?
The husband and wife run a small music label. The husband heads a separate visual arts company. The two children study arts and music. The house is filled with art and musical instruments. The design sought to provide the space needed for each of the family to develop individually, while providing proximity to connect.
